Haley Kilpatrick’s work with Girl Talk, the peer mentoring organization she founded, was the inspiration for The Drama Years. Through Girl Talk, she has developed a number of programs that serve the social and emotional needs of young girls, as well as a comprehensive collection of resources, as well as a new book, that can assist the adults who work with them.
Please see more details below about the Girl Talk program itself, which facilitates the creation of mentoring groups led by high school girls for middle school girls in schools, churches, clubs, and anywhere else girls gather. Girl Talk provides a broad curriculum of discussion guides and activities around relevant topics, in addition to many other resources, at no cost to the high school leaders for use in their weekly meetings.
In addition, Girl Talk hosts summer day camps built around its principles that includes topical discussions, speakers, friendship-building activities, and community service projects, all of which are led by high school leaders serving as counselors. Girl Talk also offers leadership retreats for girls, and provides through its website a host of parent and teacher resources intended to educate adults about the issues girls face and ways to facilitate positive discussion about them.
